McKINNON CHAINS SIMPLIFIED

Chain is self-preserving, that is, it has opposing forces at work when it is used, at every compression point it has a tensile stress opposing it, and vice versa this is the reason that chain breaks where the opposing forces meet which is between the crown and the barrel.

CONFIGIRATION

Short link = material diameter x 3 = pitch

Long link =  material diameter x 4 = pitch

Extra long link = material diameter x 6 = pitch

Other chains include conveyor chains and calibrated chain

The pitch is the inside link length of the chain

McKINNON CHAIN SPECIFICATIONS

As mass chain suppliers, we comply to national and international standards with the required type approval standards.

The most common standards are:

SANS 251 for long and extra-long link chains

SANS 189 for short link steel chain

SANS4778- Chain slings of welded construction (Grade 8)

DNV type approval for offshore lifting (containers and oil rigs)

Noorddeutsch Metall beruffsgenosshenschaft (H mark – H46) requirement for selling lifting chain into most European countries

EN 818, BS EN, EN12079,(part 1+2)

McKINNON CHAIN COATINGS

Natural finish

A natural chain quality is excellent it is susceptible to the elements and rust with time is inevitable.

Hot-dip galvanized

Thick zinc coating applied using a molten zinc bath with resultant good anti-corrosive properties. Can only be used for grade 3-Grade 7 chain.

Zinc Thermal diffused chain

The protective layer consists of three distinct Iron Zinc alloy layers after zinc has diffused into the steel. The process typically takes place at temperatures between 380 and 400 ºC. Apart from excellent anti-corrosion properties it also has excellent abrasion resistance, anti-spark properties, and freedom from any type of embrittlement. Available in chain grades 3-8.

Normally used in harsh environments such as offshore/marine.

Electro galvanized or electroplated chain

This is a chemical process and gives a good appearance as well as protection from the elements. Normally used on hardware chain.
